The Power of the Pause

I've been noticing lately that my life is full of pauses - moments where nothing seems to be happening, but that are packed with meaning or emotion, nevertheless. Some of them I like, and some of them I don't.

Pauses I Like:

  • The pause that happens when you drive under a bridge and the sound of the rain stops, just for a second, and then resumes again.
  • The in-tempo pause that happens about a measure before the climax chorus of a song, like in Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying. The pause is even better when the chorus comes in with a new, more powerful, tear-jerking key change. (Hanging on a Moment by LIfehouse is another example of a powerful pause.)
Pauses I Don't Like:
  • The pause that immediately follows the question to your husband: "So does this look good on me?"
Ok, I guess I can onl think of one pause that I don't like at the moment. Am I missing any?
